SOAP KUDOS

Anti-soap opera factions, with their smug PBS smiles, have long categorized classics like "As the World Turns" and "Guiding Light" as trashy daytime television, something the lower classes might tune in to, or those who "don't work for a living."

But millions of devotees know better, from holders of doctorates to great novelists to generations of families who pass down their favorite show like their grandmother's heirloom set of china.

There's nothing quite like a story line that never ends.
