Find out how she does it, only next week, only on As The World Turns.
MORE FROM THE BBQ!

Welcome home, Mindy!

Only this week, only on Guiding Light.
MILESTONES

On June 30, 1952, Guiding Light premiered on CBS-TV. It replaced another Procter & Gamble show, The First 100 Years (profiled here.)

Six years later, on June 30, 1958, another P&G show, From These Roots, debuted on NBC-TV.

During its three and a half year run, the serial featured Ann Flood (later Nancy on The Edge of Night), Susan Brown (later Gail on GH), Henderson Forsythe (later David on As The World Turns), Robert Mandan (later Sam on Search for Tomorrow), Barbara Berjer (later Barbara on Guiding Light and Bridget on Another World), and future primetime stars like Charlotte Rae (Facts of Life), Richard Thomas (The Waltons) and Tony Award winner Vera Allen, who would appear on SFT and AW, as well.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW: DON SCARDINO (EX-JOHNNY, GUIDING LIGHT; EX-CHRIS, ANOTHER WORLD)

Episodes of "30 Rock," NBC's hit sitcom, which was created by and stars Tina Fey, are often enhanced by New York stage actors' guest turns.

Discussing this event of turns, among other topics, is a co-producer and frequent director of the show, Don Scardino.

The former actor spent 25 years on the boards and opposite side of the camera. On Broadway, he's played a few good roles and directed Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men, the 1989 Broadway drama that preceded a Kennedy Center break-in engagement with a tryout at the University of Virginia...

Soap operas, he believes, "are a great training ground." He appeared as a regular on "Guiding Light," "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing," "As the World Turns," "Ryan's Hope," "All My Children," and "Another World," receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination for the last.

At 16, Scardino had the opportunity to become one of the Monkees, but his "Guiding Light" contract prevented him from accepting the offer. "The Beatles were my idols, and the Monkees were going to be the 'American Beatles.' I was devastated, especially when their TV series and records became so popular. But it all turned out for the best. I wouldn't want to be known today as 'a former Monkee.'

Read the entire interview at Playbill.com.

Fun fact: When Scardino was nominated for his role as Chris on AW in 1986 it was in the category of Outstanding Younger Leading Man in a Drama Series. He was 38 years old. An age limit of actors needing to be under 25 was instituted soon after.

SOAP FIRSTS

Often given credit as being the first TV soap opera, The First 100 Years was, in fact, the first ever daytime television show sponsored by Procter & Gamble, as well as being CBS-TV's first soap.

It went off the air 57 years ago this Saturday, on June 27, 1952, after an almost two year run.

Unlike the heavy drama that would characterize its replacement, Guiding Light, and most of the shows that came after, The First 100 Years was more light and comical in nature. It was a spin-off from an episode of a nighttime anthology series, Silver Theater, and the original production starred Jimmy Lyndon and William Frawley who, a few years later, would make his permanent television mark as Fred Mertz, the lovable Lucy's landlord!

The title referred to the popular claim that "the first 100 years of a marriage are the hardest," and followed the travails of a newly married couple, Chris and Connie Thayer, who moved into a collapsing Victorian mansion, and attempted to fix it up while fending off the good-natured interference of meddling in-laws.

The show ran 15 minutes a day, for which the cast rehearsed for four hours beforehand. A special set was built to represent the multi-story dwelling, but cameramen also visited quaint villas in Long Island and Westchester to shoot authentic, small town backgrounds.

The First 100 Years was also the first show to use a teleprompter.

RING THEM BELLS!

Lynn Herring, soon to join the cast of As The World Turns as Henry Coleman's grifter (and very fertile; besides Henry, Eve and Maddie there are five more siblings we've yet to meet) mama, got to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this morning.

If having a woman who plays a con-artist on TV kick-start the market doesn't fix this economy, then nothing will!
ANOTHER WORLD: TEN YEARS LATER

When www.AnotherWorldToday.com launched at the beginning of May, we promised fans the chance to write their own Another World stories using their favorites characters.

Well, today is the day! NBC took Another World off the air on June 25, 1999. Ten years later, you get to continue Bay City’s story!

Here is how it will work:

1) Pick one character from anytime during AW’s run. The only restrictions are you may not pick a character who is officially dead in Bay City (i.e. Michael Hudson, Ryan Harrison, Sally Frame, Jake & Vicky McKinnon, etc…) or one who is currently featured in Another World Today.

2) Go to www.Twitter.com and register your character, complete with screen-name and profile (photo optional). A good example to use as a guide is the Guiding Light Twitter account of Mindy Lewis at http://twitter.com/MelindaSueLewis.

3) Sign up to follow https://twitter.com/AWToday. This will be the hub.

4) Characters will be handed out on a first-come, first served basis. One you sign up to follow AWToday, if you are the first person to request a particular character AWToday will follow you back. That is how you will know that you are officially signed up. If AWToday does not follow you back and you see another account with the character you requested, that means they signed up first, and you will need to pick another character.

5) Once you have been approved, start Twittering! Tell us what you are up to now! Are you married to the love of your life? Any kids? Where are you working? Who are your friends? What drama, romance and intrigue is going on in your life? Give us a complete storyline!

6) Another World Today reserves the right to terminate any account if it is judged that your character is behaving inappropriately. (For instance, Alice Frame may not become a serial killer, Catlin Ewing may not suddenly turn into a Harvard educated investment banker, Iris Cory should probably not commence doing good deeds ala Mother Theresa – unless she’s playing an angle.)

7) Another World Today reserves the right to terminate any account that remains inactive for over two weeks, and give another user the right to play the character.

8) As this is an officially sanctioned continuation of Another World, all characters remain the intellectual property of TeleNext Media Inc. By participating you agree that no payment will be made for any material submitted, and that any work created for and on the site is the property of TeleNext Media Inc.

9) Harassment of another player will result in the immediate termination of your Another World Today affiliated Twitter account.

10) If a character being played in the Twitter version of Another World Today is, at any point, incorporated into the main Another World Today story, that character will be removed from the Twitter-based version.

If you do not want to play a character but simply want to follow the action of other players, click to follow https://twitter.com/AWToday under your own screen-name.

(Over the past few days, Twitter has been slow to update the follower/following status. Please give it about 24 hours to register. Thank you for your patience.)

NBC made June 25 an ending for Another World. Together, we can make it a new beginning!

Please join us!
