FLASHBACK: Iris Cory
TEXAS starring Beverlee McKinsey was an unprecedented credit when the Another World spin-off premiered on NBC in 1980 (even the great ATWT diva Eileen Fulton only warranted an "and Eileen Fulton as Lisa" at the end of her show's credits).
So who was this Iris Cory brought so unforgettably to life by the star-billed Miss McKinsey?
She made her debut on AW in 1972 as Mac Cory's spoiled daughter, sickly young Dennis' mother and Elliot Carrington's soon-to-be ex-wife.
When Iris learned that Elliot might be moving on with Alice Frame (yes, of Alice/Steve/Rachel fame), Iris came to Bay City and used her new pal, Rachel, to break the fledgling couple up.
Alas, Iris soon found Rachel to be an even bigger threat than Alice ever was, when Iris' precious Daddy, Mac, fell for the considerably younger woman.
Iris tried bribing Rachel. She tried hiring a gigolo to seduce her away. She tried hiring people to spy on her. Her efforts merely succeeded in a furious Mac disinheriting his little girl.
This made Iris very vexed.
Without putting her Rachel-hate too far on the back-burner, Iris proceeded to run roughshod over several Bay City men, both eligible -- and not so eligible. She also found time to butt into the now teenage Dennis' love life, bribing love interests right and left, and even hiring yet another gigolo to seduce the girl she thought would be right for Dennis, away from his best friend, Jamie Frame.
Iris' Daddy-centered world was crushed in 1978 when she learned that Mac and his first wife had adopted her as an infant, and that her real mother was a Russian fashion wannabe (think Sally Spectra from B&B... only with less class).
Shaken, Iris followed Dennis to his new job in Houston, where she ran into one Alex Marshall, the man who we were soon to learn just might have been the one responsible for turning her into the less than warm and cuddly person that she became.
How did he do it? And what happened next with Iris, Alex, and Dennis? Tune into the AOL/PGP Classic Soaps Channel and check out TEXAS today!

BEFORE HE WAS JEN'S DAD: John Aniston (Martin; SFT)
Well, technically, John Aniston was already Jennifer's dad when he appeared on Search for Tomorrow from 1978 to 1984. (Jennifer was born in 1969).
But, let's just say the world wasn't aware yet that he would become best known as "Jennifer's father." (Kind of like, hey, did you know Nicole Ritchie's dad has a new album out?)
To see the kind of cheating, yet charming, scoundrel Jennifer was watching her Daddy play all during those crucial growing up years, check out the current broadcasts of SFT on the AOL/PGP Classic Soaps Channel today!
WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Margaret Colin (Paige; EON)
Currently appearing (and ingesting a great deal of coffee) on the AOL/PGP Classic Soap Channel's broadcast of Edge of Night is Margaret Colin, playing wealthy heiress/ex-radical terrorist Paige Madison (one suspects a certain Miss Patty Hearst may have been the inspiration for this particular character).
Paige spends the bulk of her one year, on-air stint being shot, stabbed and left to die. But, like the Energizer Bunny, she just keeps going and going and going.
A few months after leaving EON, Colin showed up on another P&G soap, As The World Turns, playing John Dixon's illegitimate daughter, Margo Montgomery. There, her life was most famously in danger from a homicidal dwarf named Mr. Big. (Yes, this is the story The New York Times mocked in their review of Oakdale Confidential. Ahem, NYT: At least when ATWT tells outlandish tales, it prominently labels them as fiction, and doesn't attempt to pass them off as news. Cough, cough, Jayson Blair, cough, cough).
But the Mr. Big saga did have a happy ending in that it showed Margo that she was in love with Tom Hughes (then Justin Deas; above), whom she's been married to (on and off) since 1983.
In real-life, Colin married co-star Deas (now Buzz on GL) and left ATWT in 1983.
Since then, she has appeared in everything from the television series, Foley Square, Chicago Hope, and Now & Again, to the feature films, Pretty in Pink, Three Men and a Baby, Independence Day and Blue Car.
She is the mother of two sons, Sam and Joe, and the honorary co-chair of the organization, Feminists for Life.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT... AND THEY'RE COMING HOME!
Two soap kids viewers saw born on the air are coming home to Oakdale and Springfield, respectively. One has a brand new face, while another sports an oddly familiar one...
ATWT's Adam was born to Margo Hughes in September of 1988. His biological father was Hal Munson. But, since Margo was married to Tom Hughes at the time, and Tom was willing to raise the boy as his own son, he was initially named Adam (after the late son of the woman who helped Margo deliver him), Christopher (after Tom's grandpa), Harold (after his "godfather" Hal) Hughes.
As a tot, Adam was played by Philip Webster Smith IV, the real-life son of Hillary Bailey Smith (now Nora; OLTL) who was playing Margo at the time.
Little Adam lived the typical life of a soap kid for several years. Months and months of invisibility periodically interrupted by a holiday gathering, threatened custody battle and/or kidnapping.
He was around 10 when he learned that Hal was his biological father, but accepted the news with a philosophical, "cool, now I have two dads" grace.
At 15, however, Adam did not take to Tom's affair with Emily Stewart with anything resembling grace. Adam proceeded to change his name to Munson and move in with Hal and his new wife, Barbara. Eventually, Adam and Tom reconciled, and it was back to My Two Dads for the usually happy-go-lucky teen.
He shared his first kiss with Abigail Williams (though he lost his virginity to slutty Brandy). Adam stood by Abigail when she thought she'd murdered sleazy Nick, and though he wanted her to move to California and USC film school with him, she realized she only loved him as a friend and gently declined. A few months later, however, Abigail decided to visit Adam in California and then chose to stay out there, though the exact nature of their relationship was never defined.
Craig Lawlor, the final actor to play Adam, was last seen in Oakdale in October of 2002.
Matthew J. Morrison takes over the role on Tuesday, October 24th, 2006 as the all grown up music producer.
Meanwhile, over in Springfield, everything old is new again as Kimberly J. Brown briefly returns to the role of Marah Lewis (named after Josh's mother, Martha, and Reva's mom, Sarah) on Friday, November 17, 2006. Brown last played the part in 1993, when Marah was merely Josh and Reva's little girl, shocked to see her mother return from the dead after Marah, Josh, and Shayne had made a life with his new love, Annie.
Since Brown's been away, Marah has seen her parents remarry and divorce, and remarry and divorce. She dated hunky Tony Santos, lost her virginity to a mob goon (no, not Tony, the other one - Romeo), and even had a dalliance with Jeffrey O'Neill, the man who looks exactly like the Prince her mother married while she was presumed dead!
Kimberly J. Brown is certainly no little girl anymore... but is she woman enough to be Marah Lewis? Tune in to GL in November and find out!

DOUBLE YOUR CONROY, DOUBLE YOUR FUN!
Sure, Martha Byrne (Lily/ex-Rose; ATWT), Julianne Moore (ex-Frannie/Sabrina; ATWT), Ellen Wheeler (ex-Marley/Vicky; AW), Anne Heche (ex-Marley/Vicky; AW) and Jensen Buchanan (still ex-Marley/Vicky; AW) can rack up the Emmy noms/wins for playing a dual role on their respective shows.
But through the miracle of the PGP/AOL Classic Soap Channel, actor Kevin Conroy is currently playing two roles on two different shows.
That's right, in the circa 1980 Another World episodes, he's innocent, good guy cop/lawyer Jerry Grove, husband of that trashy Blaine. But the innocent good guy cop/lawyer has a whopper of a secret (don't they always?), that kind of taints the innocent and the good parts when it finally comes out (doesn't it always?)
Meanwhile, over in 1984 Search for Tomorrow, Kevin is Chase Kendall. Bad boy, womanizer, rock singer/music producer who also has a secret. Seems the bad boy honestly fell in love with his twin brother's girl while the brother was presumed dead. But now the brother's back. So what's a bad boy to do, but pretend it didn't mean a thing and push the girl back into his brother's arms? Even as his really-not-so-bad heart is breaking.
After AW and SFT, Kevin went on to appear in Dynasty as Bart Fallmont, the politician who ended up riding off into the sunset with Steven Carrington (though Kevin didn't play him in the reunion movie; I know, it's confusing).
But Kevin's best-known role to date is as the voice of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series since 1992. Currently, he has played Batman more times than Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale combined.
And now, your question of the day: What's your favorite soap opera dual role?
I, personally, am partial to Santa Barbara's Lane Davies when he was Mason the uptight lawyer and Sonny the free-wheeling cowboy. (I know, I know, technically not a dual role since it was a split personality story, not a true, two character story. But it's my blog and I get to set the rules). For a more traditional choice, I also liked Paul Leyden as Simon and Donovan on ATWT, David Canary as Adam and Stuart on AMC, and, for a laugh, Eileen Davidson as all those psychos and hicks and nuns on DOOL.
You?

ISLAM IN THE LONE STAR STATE
When TEXAS premiered on NBC on August 4, 1980, they did so with an unprecedented detail that, to my knowledge, doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves.
In 1980, as Saudi Arabia nationalized their foreign oil companies to manipulate international markets, Iraq invaded Iran, U.S. hostages remained trapped in Teheran and Palestinian terrorists waged their war against Israel by bombing a synagogue in France, TEXAS' first episode featured an, of all things, Arab-Muslim family, headed by Sheik Zehedi (Mitch Gred) and his daughter, Princess Jasmine (Donna Cyrus). (Those now struggling with the urge to hum A Whole New World due to her name, please continue struggling).
The family hailed from Tanquir (which, if it has caves, may well be the same Tanquir where Guiding Light's Quint and Nola kept going; However, for those keeping score, the San Cristobel where Another World's Paulina Cory grew up is not the San Cristobal Richard and Edmund Winslow ruled over on GL).
We knew the Zehedis were Arabs because they were coming to Texas to speak about (what else?) oil, and we knew they were Muslims because, in the first scene, the Sheik is shown on a plane, clutching a Koran.
Granted, after being introduced on Another World in July of 1980, the Sheik promptly died a few weeks later. But he died with a huge secret unrevealed, which is the least an aspiring soap patriarch can do, leaving his daughter, the aforementioned Jasmine, to seek truth, justice, and an American male once she became a full-fledged cast-member of TEXAS.
Meanwhile, colonel Ahmed Al Hassine (Maher Boutros) lurks threateningly about, clearly plotting something nefarious, as colonels are wont to do.
So what was the Sheik so eager to hide from his daughter that he made Ryan Connor (Phillip Clark) swear never to reveal it?
Tune in to TEXAS and find out!

WHEN BROADWAY BABIES HIT THE SOAPS...
Kids on soap operas tend to have simple job qualifications: look cute, stand still, deliver your few lines as ungarbled as possible, then go "upstairs" and stay there.
Occasionally, a Hayden Panettiere (ex-Lizzie, GL), Andrea Barber (ex-Carrie, DOOL), Kimberly McCullough (Robin, GH), Erin Torpey (ex-Jessica, OLTL), or Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH) manages to break through and get some actual acting done. (For the record, even though consensus on the message boards is that he shrieks too much, I think ATWT's Dylan Denton (JJ) is pretty good, as well).
On the other hand, kids who act on Broadway need to sing, dance, and act -- live, in seven to nine shows a week. That takes a ton of talent and even more dedication and hard work. Which is why Broadway Babies tend to make outstanding soap kids, as well.
Both AMC's Lacey Chabert (ex-Bianca) and Tommy Michaels (ex-Tim) did time on the barricades of Les Miz.
Martha Byrne (Lily; ATWT) appeared on Broadway in Annie. The original Annie herself, Andrea McArdle, played Wendy on SFT from 1974-1977. (Guess she went from Searching for Tomorrow, to... singing about it).
And before she was a train in Starlight Express, a movie star wannabe in Grand Hotel, a promiscuous stewardess in Company, Barbra Streisand-lite in Funny Girl and barely clothed with Antonio Banderas in Nine -- not to mention the bra-on-her-face girl in Ally McBeal -- a fifteen year old Jane Krakowski was fiesty orphan T.R. on Search for Tomorrow.
Tune in to the AOL/PGP Classic Soap Channel right now to find out what happens when T.R., who is about to realize a lifelong dream of being adopted into the wholesome and loving Sentell family, learns that her real father is the evil Lloyd Kendall (hiss, boo....).
Warning: Don't be frightened by the leg-warmers, shoulder-pads and big hair little Jane is sporting in these episodes. It was the 80s, kids. Yes, young people actually wanted to look this way.

BEFORE THEY WERE SOAP STARS: Kim Hunter (Nola; Edge of Night)
Specials like Before They Were Stars love to open the vaults for clips of folks like Meg Ryan, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore on As the World Turns, Melina Kanakaredes, Taye Diggs and JoBeth Williams on Guiding Light, Larry Hagman on Edge of Night, Olympia Dukakis on Search for Tomorrow and Anne Heche on Another World and announce that we're seeing them "before they were stars."
Uhm... first of all, the folks listed above already were stars. They were soap stars. Moore and Heche won Emmys (each for a dual role, btw). Ryan was part of a mega-supercouple (Steve & Betsy -- they were so big, their love song warranted an on-air performance by Jermaine Jackson and Whitney Houston!).
Presumably, we're supposed to infer that we're seeing these actors before they became real stars, i.e. on TV or in films.
But how to explain the fact that, for some actors, daytime wasn't a stepping stone to real stardom, but rather where they came after making a splash in other, allegedly more impressive media.
Kim Hunter played Stella (yes, "Steeeeeeellllllah," that one) in the 1951 screen version of A Streetcar Named Desire. She was in the groundbreaking Requiem for a Heavyweight on the small screen in 1957, under heavy make-up as Zira, the female lead in the Planet of the Apes series of movies, and guest-starred on practically every prestigious TV drama put out during the so called "golden age of television."
And yet, in 1979, she took a role on The Edge of Night. Not before she was a star, but because she was a star.
See this great lady of stage, screen and television on the AOL PGP Classic Soap Channel, now!
Ron Raines will appear with the Florida Orchestra Pops for a Rodgers and Hammerstein Celebration. Performances are scheduled for Friday, November 10th at the Carol Morsani Hall in Tampa, Saturday, November 11th at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and Sunday, November 12th at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. For tickets, please call the box office at (813) 286-2403. For more information, please visit www.floridaorchestra.org.
Not in Florida? How about New York City? Ellen Dolan (Margo; ATWT) will host Daytime Stars Out at Night,” an event with the Workshop Theater Group, on Monday, October 23rd at 8:00 PM at the Lucille Lortelle Theater, located at 121 Christopher St. Scheduled to perform are Michael Park (Jack; ATWT), Trent Dawson (Henry; ATWT), Tamara Tunie (Jessica; ATWT), Jennifer Landon (Gwen; ATWT), Alexandra Chando (Maddie; ATWT) and -- here he is again! -- Ron Raines. For tickets, please visit www.theatermania.com.
In my humble opinion, Ron stole the show at last year' s inaugural event. His Broadway credits include Showboat and Chicago. (For the movie minded, he played the parts assumed in the movies by Howard Keel and Richard Gere, respectively).
Want to sneak a listen of Ron's golden pipes? Click here: The album is The Musicality of Rodgers & Hammerstein. Ron performs Oh! What a Beautiful Mornin' from Oklahoma.
As an extra musical soap bonus, check out Judy Blazer (ex-Ariel; ATWT) doing Everybody's Got a Home but Me, and Brett Barrett, a.k.a. The Guy Who Killed Jenny from All My Children with a Jet-Ski, warbling No Other Love.
Monday, September 18, 2006
AOL's Classic Soap Channel is currently running episodes of Another World starting in 1980. Which means that Steven Frame (as played by David Canary before All My Children, Adam Chandler, and all those Emmys) is about to return from the dead.
Why is this such a big deal, you ask? (After all, who among us – in the soap world, that is – hasn't returned from the dead once or twice?)
Well, it's a big deal, because Steve Frame was one third of daytime's hottest triangle, the one that put the show on the map, Another World near the top of the ratings and Robin Strasser (before One Life to Live and her own Emmy) into America's living rooms.
Robin Strasser began playing Rachel Davis on Another World in 1967. At the time, her hiring was considered rather risky, as she was an ethnic (read: Jewish) type. (Had Strasser not made the huge splash she did, it's unlikely that Rachel's creator, Agnes Nixon, would have been allowed to, three years later, cast another ethnic (read: Italian) type on her new show, All My Children, by the name of Susan Lucci – perhaps you've heard of her?).
Rachel was from the wrong side of the tracks. But she didn't intend to stay there for long. Her path to respectability included marrying Dr. Russ Matthews. Alas, Rachel couldn't fight her attraction to fellow striver Steve (George Reinholt). Steve and Rachel seemed to have a lot in common. Both were born poor but determined to make something of themselves. Both were outsiders in middle-class, respectable Bay City. And both were unnaturally good looking. They should have been the perfect match. Except for that whole, Rachel being married to Russ thing... and Steve being in love with Russ' golden haired sister, Alice (Jacquie Courtney).
This being a soap and all, Rachel didn't let either of those little details stop her from seducing Steve. (To be fair, he did willingly participate). Or, later, from crashing Steve and Alice's engagement party to announce that she was carrying Steve's child.
The Rachel/Steve/Alice triangle went on until 1975 (after Steve had taken turns marrying both women, finally ending up with Alice in 1974). A new headwriter, Harding Lemay, had a problem with actor Reinholt and so killed Steve off in an Australian helicopter crash. (Reinholt and Courtney both showed up the same year on One Life to Live as star-crossed lovers Tony and Pat. Courtney ended up staying in Llanview until 1983. Reinholt barely made it to the end of 1977).
By 1980, however, with Rachel was coming off a marriage to dashing older man Mackenzie Cory (Douglas Watson) and played by Victoria Wyndham, it was time for Steve to shake off the outback residue and return to Bay City. (His and Rachel's son, Jamie (Richard Beakins), was, by then, out of college. A neat achievement for a young man born about a decade earlier).
So how did Rachel, Jamie, Alice and Mac respond to Steve's return?
Tune into Another World on the AOL Classic Soap Channel and see for yourselves!

The PGP/AOL Classic Soap Channel is currently screening episodes of "Texas," an "Another World" spin-off that ran on NBC from 1980 to 1982. One of the cast-members (1981-1982) was Harley Jane Kozak. She went on to appear in the feature films "When Harry Met Sally," "Parenthood," "Arachnaphobia," and "The Favor" (alongside a very young Brad Pitt). PGPClassicSoaps caught up with Harley to find out What She's Doing Now...
PGP: "Texas" was your first soap. How did that part come about and what were your impressions of daytime when you started?
HJK: I hadn't watched soaps since childhood, with my Grandma, and thought they still had bad sound effects and organ music. Was I shocked! This was the Luke and Laura days over at GH, so soaps were experiencing a renaissance. I got the job the usual way -- auditioning. It was the job that kept me from having to go back and wait tables, so it was a very big deal.
PGP: Your character was involved in a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" type story, with puzzle cubes, and mummified bodies and such. What was that like?
HJK: Yes, my character, Brett Wheeler, rich girl/geologist, was involved in a haunted Native American burial ground storyline. It was
called Hi-To-Pah. I remember I had to act with snakes. But the costumes were cool -- lots of hip kakhi -- and we got to shoot some location sequences in Palm Springs, which was my first time in California. Heaven!
PGP: Do you still keep in touch with any of the actors from your "Texas" days?
HJK: Only Michael Woods (ex-Jim, GL), (who played) my brother, and Gail Kobe, our executive producer. I run into Pamela Long (Ashley, TEXAS; ex-GL Headwriter) every decade or so. And (ATWT Executive Producer) Chris Goutman (George, TEXAS) is still on the Christmas card list too.
PGP: You went on to "Santa Barbara" and "GL," so you must have liked the daytime genre. What about it appealed to you?
HJK: Well, the fact that someone offered me a job was very appealing! It's very hard for an actor to say no, but ultimately I did, after "Santa Barbara" (ed. note: Where Harley played ex-nun Mary, who was squashed to death by a giant letter "C"). But I had really great times on all three shows, and with the intense storylines, wonderful co-stars and writers. My training had been all about stage and the theatre, so this was a sort of "graduate school" that taught me how to work in TV, which is a very different animal.
PGP: How did you make the transition from actor to writer? Do you use your acting background in creating characters, dialogue, etc...
HJK: I was in my mid-30's and taking writing classes because I'd always loved writing and have always written compulsively. I started to get less interesting parts as I hit forty, and then I had 3 kids in 2 years, so that REALLY put a damper on my acting career. When children #2 and #3 were still infants, I sold DATING DEAD MEN in a 2-book deal and that was it: instant career change. Yes, acting helps in dialogue, and also in putting myself emotionally into the situation of the characters, and seeing the details they see. I think the details come easily to me; it's the big stuff, the overall plot that I have to sweat blood over.
PGP: Will your your books appeal to soap opera fans?
HJK: The upcoming one, DEAD EX (due out next August) is set in the world of soaps, specifically a soap called AT THE END OF THE DAY. I hope they'll like that!
PGP: You told me you still watch soaps to this day. What do you think of them now?
HJK: I turn them on -- well, okay, I turn on "Guiding Light," at least -- when I'm in the kitchen, either cooking or baking or pretending to write. If I'm writing, I have to turn it off because it's too distracting, but I must say, I do get sucked in. Mostly it comforts me, watching my old friends still on the show. It's just a feeling of "family" that makes me happy. I don't care what the storyline is. I am continually amazed by how good the acting is, though, and how much those actors put themselves out there, day after day, year after year.
