OLTL isn't the same w/o them.

Unfortunately, I can't think of any soaps that have strong adult black male and female characters any more other than "All My Children."

Over all, I think Latino characters fair better in daytime. Of course, many of those Latino characters are also white Latinos or portrayed by non-Latino white actors. Lyndsay Hartley, who is non-Latino, became famous for her role as Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald on Passions.

As for interracial couples, I think Y&R's Lily Winters is the only black character in soaps to date and marry white males exclusively. Lily is not allowed, it seems, to externalize any authentically black racial thoughts. She never discusses being black or her place in the world as a black woman.

Unlike Hank, Nora, and RJ who discussed race in their relationships, Y&R's Lily and Cane never touched the subject. That seems odd except it's part of a larger problem at Y&R these days.

Y&R, which used to feature its African-American cast in their own lines and not as sidekicks or tokens, has stopped boxed most of those characters into their own little world that only briefly connects to the show's other cast members.

In the past the black characters had friendships and relationships outside of their bubble. Today, other than Lily, that's not true. They appear only once or twice a month.

I would agree that black and Latino interracial relationships seem to be acceptable even when the Latin is obviously white. The most popular of such pairing most recently was on One Life to Live with Layla and Cristian. But that relationship seems to be fading because of the actress who portrays Layla quit (she wasn't getting much air time and started to get offers from Hollywood. What's a woman to do?).

General Hospital just started an interracial relationship between Quartermain scion Maya Ward and Luke Spencer's son Ethan.SoapFan78https://www.blogger.com/profile/16867531085107236880noreply@blogger.com
