Perhaps it was how the actor played the role, and I know it's really a subjective call. However, his character -- Not really being able to seal the deal with Katie, accidentally bagging the exotic beauty Vienna, often winding up in pseudo drag or costume, sometimes with muscly leading men with their shirts off, ending up with the rich older damaged Barbara -- was so camp! He reminded me a bit of the actor Jack Lemmon, some of whose roles were a bit down (or up?) the Kinsey scale.
